Newborn Session Details
Due to the unpredictable nature of babies arriving early or late, we only take on a limited amount of newborn sessions per month to make sure that we can accomodate everyone and maintain our high level of service. For this reason we recommend booking in your Newborn Photography session (and Maternity) well ahead of baby’s arrival, during your second trimester if possible. However if you’ve left it late, please still enquire about our availability because we will still do our best to accomodate you.
When is the best time to photograph newborn babies?
The best time to photograph your newborn baby is ideally within their first 5-14 days of life. This is when babies tend to fall into a heavier sleep and are less likely to wake up when being handled or wrapped during posing. Newborn babies are more “pliable” to work with and tend to stay ‘curled up’ in that fetal-like position during their first few weeks of life.
Most of the newborn babies shown in the Newborn Photography Gallery on this site are under 3wks old. It is therefore highly advised that you book your newborn photography session BEFORE YOUR BABY ARRIVES, that way we can tentatively book time during those first couple of weeks for you. However, if your newborn has already arrived then please still contact us as we’ll always do our best to accommodate a last minute client for any photography session.
Newborn photography sessions are held in our spacious custom built Logan Village natural light studio where there is a wide range of internationally sourced props and equipment. The session usually takes approximately 2-3 hours which allows plenty of time for feeding, soothing and settling your baby so you can sit back and relax. There is also a bathroom and kitchenette which are both seperate from the house to help make you feel completely comfortable with tea and coffee making facilities provided.
What should I bring to our newborn photo session?
You don’t have to bring anything at all as I have everything we need to complete your newborn session in studio. However, should you have a specific item, keepsake or heirloom gift (knitted booties, baby blanket, photo, religious item etc) that you wish to include in some photos then by all means, bring that item along. Apart from that, you may wish to bring some additional snacks for yourselves and if you have older siblings then it’s recommenced to perhaps bring along some toys or something to amuse them.
What to wear?
If you’d like to have some family portraits taken with your baby then can I please suggest that you may like to wear plain coloured clothing as opposed to patterns which tend to be a little distracting and detract from the main subject of the photo…which of course, is your precious newborn. Textures such as lace and knits are great but please try to avoid bold prints, stripes or checks, even logos on Dad’s shirt can sometimes be distracting when your baby’s sweet little face is curled up on his chest next to it. If you are unsure then please bring along a few outfit options and we can go through them and decide together on the day.
Tips for a successful session.
We recommend that you feed your baby before you leave home for your session, then the car ride here will usually put them to sleep before you arrive otherwise you’re also welcome to feed them upon arrival in our comfy warm studio. Please know that there will be plenty of time for top-up feeds and soothing throughout your session.
It’s a good idea to dress your newborn in non-restrictive clothing to avoid leaving unwanted red marks on their skin for photos. A front opening onesie is ideal, (preferably without a singlet underneath if it’s not too cold) – you can always use a blanket or wrap over the top of the onesie for added warmth if needed.
If by chance you are considering possibly using a pacifier (dummy) for your newborn and have one then please consider bringing it to your session as we do find they can ‘sometimes’ assist with soothing newborns back to sleep when they are being moved so much they can get a little over-stimulated, however we also respect your choice and decision not to use one.
Finally, we suggest that you come to the studio with and open mind and place no expectations on your newborn baby with regards to how they may feel, behave and respond on the day. No two newborns are alike, they are individual tiny humans that all have their own individual comfort zones for how they like to be posed and what they can and can’t do. If your newborn is awake and settled then we will try to get awake portraits, if they are solidly asleep or ‘milk drunk’ then we can try for the more posed shots but please understand that not all newborns will go into every pose and for certain poses, they must not only be asleep but also feel comfortable in that particular pose to stay asleep and be photographed in that pose. If a newborn is not comfortable in a position then we will move onto another pose or try something else such as wrapping them to make them feel secure and safe – we will follow your newborn’s cues and be baby-led, your newborn will therefore run the session.
Should you have absolutely any questions at all, then please feel free to call, email or use the ‘contact us’ tab. Nadine will be happy to help you any way that she can to make sure that your newborn photos are something that you’ll cherish forever and that the whole experience will be an enjoyable one for the whole family.
